Keep reading to learn more.

What Is Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Hormone therapies, often referred to as hormone replacement, are treatments that help rebalance natural hormone levels that have become out of synch with the body. While the term is commonly associated with replacing estrogen in women after menopause, the treatments are used in both men and women for a variety of imbalances.

How Hormone Therapy Works

Hormone therapies work by replacing declining natural hormone levels within the body. At JOON Medical Wellness & Aesthetics we use bio-identical hormone replacement to improve your body receptiveness to treatment. These are delivered in the form of tiny pellets — about the size of a grain of rice — that we implant under the skin. They are commonly placed in the subcutaneous fat within the hip or abdomen — a.k.a. the love handles.

Insertion of the hormone pellets is quick and relatively comfortable. We can perform the treatment right in our office, so you don’t have to worry about going to a specialized clinic. Results are experienced fairly quickly and each treatment can last for up to six months. Type of hormone treatment and activity levels can affect that duration.

Who Is This Right for?

Our targeted hormone therapies are perfect for individuals who are experiencing imbalances in their natural hormone levels. Here are a few examples of the types of conditions we can treat.

Hormone Treatments for Women

There is a lot of talk about women and hormones, so it is easy to dismiss an imbalance as just a natural part of life. And it is true that your hormone levels will change as you age. However, the symptoms can be debilitating for some women, and they are not something that has the be endured.

Women produce three main “sex” hormones: testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone. Over time, the levels of the three fluctuate, with progesterone levels dropping in the peri-menopause stage and estrogen production stopping completely after the onset of menopause. This can result in a wide range of symptoms. Luckily, hormone therapy can help if you are regularly experiencing symptoms such as:

  • An inability to focus
  • Poor memory
  • Fatigue or chronically low energy levels
  • Changes in moods or mood swings
  • Increased anxiety levels
  • Night sweats and hot flashes
  • Unexplained weight gain, especially stubborn belly fat
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Dry skin and loss of elasticity in the skin
  • Hair Loss
  • Vaginal dryness, which can affect sexual enjoyment

We use EvexiPEL Hormone Pellet therapy to deliver reliable and consistent results. You can expect them to last for approximately three to four months after your treatment.

Hormone Treatments for Men

Women aren’t the only ones who experience drops in important hormones with age. In men, the most noticeable change is a decrease in testosterone levels. This results in symptoms that can range from annoying to detrimental to overall health. We offer hormone therapy men can use to relieve these common symptoms of low testosterone levels:

  • A general feeling of lethargy and lack of motivation
  • Difficulty sleeping, often coupled with chronic fatigue
  • Decreased libido or poor sexual performance
  • Changes to mood, including depression, anxiety, and mood swings
  • Increased abdominal fat
  • Weight gain that is resistant to exercise and dieting
  • Increased recovery time after exercise or injury
  • Stiff, achy joints

Hormone Treatments for Thyroid Disorder

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck. It produces an array of hormones that are critical for many bodily functions. These hormones control the body’s growth and metabolism, how our hearts beat, how our brains function, and many of our organ systems. For example, it helps regulate body temperature, appetite, and energy levels. Symptoms of thyroid disorder can vary depending on your diagnosis.

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid does not produce enough hormones. It affects both women and men, and it is one of the most underdiagnosed hormone disorders. In fact, there are tens of millions of American adults with the condition, many of whom go undiagnosed for years thanks to nonspecific symptoms that may come and go over time. In some cases, healthcare providers fail to recognize the disorder because hormone levels appear to fall within the accepted range of values.

Hypothyroidism is characterized by:

  • Very low energy levels or chronic fatigue
  • Brittle nails
  • Dry hair and possible hair loss
  • Severely dry, itchy skin
  • Constipation
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Fluid retention
  • Cold hands/feet
  • Extreme sensitivity to cold temperatures

Women are much more likely than men to experience thyroid disorder in their lifetimes — as much as eight times more so. That makes recognizing its unique symptoms in women even more important. In addition to the symptoms listed above, hypothyroidism may also impact the menstrual cycle, causing heavy or irregular periods. It also increases the risk of a miscarriage.

Why Do Hormone Levels Change?

Hormone levels naturally change as you age, so in some cases, your imbalance may just be a natural result of getting older. However, there can be other factors at play. For example, some medical conditions result in changes to hormone levels. Chronically high stress levels or pain, extreme dieting, and exposure to certain toxins in the environment can all cause hormones to fluctuate.

Regardless of the reason your levels are fluctuating, failing to diagnose and control them can lead to serious health complications. After all, your hormones control a large number of the biological processes that go on within the body. At JOON Medical Wellness & Aesthetics, we pride ourselves on our skills in diagnosing hormone disorders such as thyroid dysfunction, and low levels of testosterone, progesterone, and estrogen in our patients.

So blessed to have found Shawn! She is seriously one of the most caring and knowledgeable providers I’ve ever seen. … More From day one I felt like she actually listened to me and didn’t just rush me in and out. The Spruce app utilized by her practice makes communication seamless .
She has already gotten my hormones moving in the right directions, which is something my PCP couldn’t figure out for years, and that alone has been life-changing.
What really got me was she messaged me on a Sunday just to make sure I got my medication refill… like who does that anymore?! That says everything about how much she truly cares about her patients.
It’s such a relief to finally feel heard and taken care of. I’m so glad I found her and I would 100% recommend her to anyone.
